___What? Skip summer? Me a girl who changes with the season like Tess Durbeyfield? A girl who should be prepared to be at her happiest in the dog days of July?
What?
___ But it's true. I'm really not looking forward to this summer at all. Because guess what? All I'm going to be doing is swimming every day (a lot more fun that it actually is), lifeguarding (the most boring job you can possibly have), and just
waiting. Waiting for someone to give me
something in terms of money for college. I basically worked hard my whole entire life to have different organizations come and tell me, "Hey, sorry, you're not qualified to remotely have a chance of winning this scholarship; thanks for wasting all that time filling out our ridiculous applications." Waiting for
something remotely
magical to happen. Nothing huge or spectacular. I'm not looking for a
Notebook summer romance or a life changing kind of experience. Just a moment, a sentence,
something to brighten the crummy town I live in.
____Maybe I'm just being impatient. After all, the prospect of college has been on my mind since middle school, and it's
so close and yet
so far away. And I honestly hate working. I hate going to a job to watch a bunch of either bratty children or wrinkly, miserable old people swimming around. I hate knowing that to them I'm a part of the scenery, hardly someone to recognize. I hate having to listen to some
idiot who plays favorites and a board of people who take nepotism to an entirely different level. College has always been my idea of an escape, and I can't
wait to make that departure.
____But, hey, maybe summer
will surprise me in the end. There's always hope for a better tomorrow, and at worst that tomorrow comes the day I take the two hour drive to my new home.
