I cannot believe I've just discovered this amazing spread from Vogue December 2008. Romeo & Juliet was my first Shakespeare read. Though it is not quite my favorite Shakespeare read (A Midsummer Night's Dream seems to have superseded it), I will always have a soft spot for the trials and tragedies of true love, despite the "shortcomings" modern society finds in it.

It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear;
Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!

Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing.
Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.

Sweet, sweet, sweet nurse, tell me, what says my love?
Nurse: Your love says, like an honest gentleman, and a
courteous, and a kind, and a handsome, and, I
warrant, a virtuous,--Where is your mother?

For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone
Till holy church incorporate two in one.

That late thou gavest me; for Mercutio's soul
Is but a little way above our heads,
Staying for thine to keep him company:
Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him.

A cold and drowsy humour, for no pulse
Shall keep his native progress, but surcease:
No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest;
The roses in thy lips and cheeks shall fade
To paly ashes, thy eyes' windows fall,
Like death, when he shuts up the day of life;

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
